Sher Garhi Palace is a palace in Srinagar
, the capital of Indian
state
of Jammu and Kashmir
.[1] The palace is the former residence
of the Maharajas of Jammu and Kashmir
from the Dogra Dynasty
. The palace complex is located in the southern part of the city on the left bank of the Jhelum River
. Sher Garhi means 'tiger fortress'. The complex was constructed as a fortress
and a palace by the Afghan governor Jawansher Khan in 1772. The palace has been extended several times in the 19th century. Nowadays, the complex is called the 'Old Secretariat' and houses administrative departments of the government of Jammu and Kashmir
. The palace was gutted by fire in the early 21st century.
